about

Another year, another Gungans record, same pandemic. Hope is on the horizon but things are still iffy as of this release. I'm 1/2 vaccinated and considering what life might feel like without the looming threat of COVID-19 always in the back of my mind. Since the last record there's been over 500,000 deaths in the USA, and several friends of mine have endured the virus themselves (all are in decent shape now, thankfully). We saw unprecedented insurrection at the Capitol less than two months ago, after which the president was impeached (again) and an uneasy but thankfully smooth transition of power following an election that was plagued by claims of fraud and theft during a situation where voters felt vulnerable. They say hindsight is 20/20...

And yet I've been lucky enough to thrive since the last Gungans album came out about a year ago. I taught myself how to play drums (hence real drums on this album), began exercising regularly, stopped drinking, and began studying Japanese. I also spent every day with my family in our comfortable home and in a safe environment where comfortable routines slowly but steadily soothed our anxieties and insecurities.

This batch of Gungans tunes happened organically but my approach was different than before. I wrote melodies and chords first, then recorded everything before having titles or lyrics. I wrote titles and lyrics based on the feel of each song, and then recorded vocals and guitar leads last. Everything was written quickly without second-guessing the process. The recording felt like it took longer but that's only because I was working on the album as a whole for the first time (usually I crank out entire songs and stack them until I have enough for an album). The results are satisfying in a different way than before, and I hope you enjoy these tunes.

In a world where much uncertainty remains, at least there's silly pop punk to keep us all going, eh? Take care out there, everyone. Hope to see you soon.
